Abstract

A process for the treatment of melted magnesium or magnesium alloys in apparatus, such as crucibles, of iron or iron alloys is characterized in that at least that part of the apparatus coming into contact with the molten metal or alloy is covered with a protective layer of chromium free from iron. The chromium layer may be deposited electrolytically or chemically and the apparatus may then be heat treated to diffuse the chromium into the iron or iron alloy surface.
