Abstract

656,936. Radioactive sulphur. SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH, HONORARY ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR. Dec. 30, 1948, No. 33560. [Class 39 (iv)] [Also in Group I] Radioactive sulphur is separated from neutronirradiated water-soluble chlorides by passing air upwards through a filter in a reaction zone into an aqueous solution of the chlorides in the presence of hydrogen chloride gas while keeping the temperature of the reaction low to facilitate precipitation of the chlorides, the flow of air being discontinued to allow the sulphur to pass through the filter which retains the precipitated chlorides. The reaction vessel 1 is provided with a restricted lower portion 2 in which is a filter 3 made, e.g. of sintered glass. Air is passed in through the tube 4 which has a valve 5, the control of which can be effected remotely, the air escaping by the vent 7. Cooling is effected by the cooling jacket 10, while hydrogen chloride gas passes in by the tube 8.
