Abstract
656,921. Counting-apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 5, 1948, No. 289. [Class 106 (i)] In an impulse counting mechanism, a continuously operating power source is coupled to count-registering mechanism by a friction clutch comprising a helical spring wound coaxially on a shaft, the clutch being engaged and disengaged by power derived from the power source under control of a device operable by the impulses to be counted. As shown, a motor 1 continuously drives a shaft 4 which is frictionally coupled to a hollow shaft 5 by a spring 8 secured between the shaft 5 and a ratchet 10 freely mounted on shaft 4. Electrical impulses to be counted energize an electromagnet 13 which then attracts an armature 12 and detent 11 to free the ratchet and thus allow the spring to tighten on the shaft 4 so that the shaft 5 is driven and operates a counter 6. The counter shown may be replaced by printing mechanism. In another form, the shaft 4 is hollow and surrounds the shaft 5.
