Abstract
Sodium or calcium penicillin is obtained by treating a solution of potassium penicillin with a solution of a sodium or calcium salt soluble in the solvent in question of an acid whose potassium salt is sparingly soluble in the solvent employed; the potassium salt which separates is then removed. Suitable solvents are water, methanol and ethanol, and sodium or calcium perchlorate may be used to precipitate the potassium. If the sodium or calcium penicillin is required in the solid state, the solvent (e.g. methanol), is distilled or evaporated in vacuo until the salt precipitates or crystallizes. A further solvent (in which sodium or calcium penicillin is less soluble than in methanol), may be added before or after the evaporation to help crystallization. If added before evaporation, this solvent should be less volatile than methanol. Suitable solvents are alcohols, esters and ethers, e.g. the propanols and butanols, ethyl and butyl acetates, di-ethyl, di-isopropyl and di-isoamyl ethers and dioxane. Examples are given of the process carried out in methanol, using butanol and diethyl ether as auxiliary solvents.
