Abstract
656,801. Positive-ion tubes. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Sept. 3, 1948, No. 23226. [Class 39 (i)] In a travelling-wave linear proton accelerator, the waves are propagated along a wire helix to accelerate protons injected along the axis. The pitch of the helix progressively increases along the helix. Radio-frequency power is fed to the low-velocity end of the helix through a matched transmission line, and the highvelocity end is terminated in a matched load, or is made resonant by a short-circuit, or feed-back to the low-velocity end may be provided, as in Specification 654,906, [Group XL (b)]. The helix may be surrounded by an earthed outer. conductor. The diameter of the outer conductor may be reduced to increase the accelerating field and the attenuation of the helix at the high-velocity end. As shown, the helix 2 is supported by rings 6, 11 and is enclosed in a chamber 1, the walls of which constitute the outer conductor. A window 12, for example of aluminium, is provided for the emergence of the protons. An axial magnetic field or an electrostatic lens system may be provided for focusing the proton stream. The proton stream may be generated by a Van de Graeff accelerator.
