Abstract
656,570. Magnetrons. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. March 11, 1948, No. 7459. Convention date, May 10, 1947. Addition to 630,710. [Class 39 (i)] A strapped multicavity magnetron has an auxiliary cathode 23 adjacent to but outside the straps 18, 19, and so arranged as to introduce electrons between the straps, thereby altering the capacity between the straps and the frequency of the magnetron. Cathode 23 comprises a toroidal portion 25 filled with insulation 30 and containing a heater wire 28. The toroid is split at one point to allow connection to be made to one end of the heater through lead-in 29. The other end of the heater is connected to the casing 25 to which a lead-in 31 is provided. The under-side of the cathode, as shown in plan in Fig. 4, and in section in Fig. 6, may comprise a number of cups 33 in the bottoms of which are patches of electron-emissive material 34. The cups in conjunction with the magnetic field of the magnetron serve to focus the electrons between the straps. As shown in the Figures the cups may be staggered to overlie the clearances provided for the straps 18, 19.
