Abstract
656,568. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 5, 1948, No. 6866. Convention date, March 8, 1947. [Class 39 (i)] In a travelling-wave amplifier, the electron beam is deflected periodically in passing through a cavity resonator 6, across two openings 9, 9A in an electrode 8, so as to provide two bunched beams for transferring energy to two helices 11, 11A. A travelling wave having a component of velocity approximately equal to, and in the same direction as, that of the bunched electrons is set up in each helix. Accelerator electrodes 10, 10A are provided between the electrode 8, and the helices 11, 11A. The helices may be of decreasing pitch, or of constant pitch, but divided into sections having increasing potentials. In a modification, Fig. 2, the helices are curved, and united at their outer ends 18 where there is provided a common output 19 for the waves. In another modification deflecting and focusing electrodes are provided between the electrode 8 and the accelerating electrodes 10, 10A, so as to cause the bunched beams to travel parallel with the direction of the unmodulated beam. Magnetic focussing coils surrounding the helices may be provided. Specification 656,561 is referred to.
