Abstract

Oxide cathodes for electric discharge tubes are made from an alloy of copper with barium and/or strontium formed as a dendritic mass whose interstices are filled with the eutectic alloy or alloys. A preferred alloy is pure copper with a few per cent of a mixture comprising 5 parts of barium and 1 part of strontium. In an example described, an alloy of copper and 1.6 per cent barium-obtained by adding 3 per cent barium to molten copper kept under argon, thoroughly stirring the aggregate and then subjecting it to chiled casting-is turned so as to form a tube 2 m.m. in diameter and 60 microns in wall thickness. The dendritic formation is not disturbed. The cathode is then formed by oxidation and activation.
