Abstract

Salts of sulphonic acids of substituted or unsubstituted aromatic nuclei are prepared by neutralization of the acid in liquid sulphur dioxide with a suitable salt, such as a sulphite, bisulphite, pyrosulphite, sulphate, pyrosulphate, halide, carbonate or acetate of an alkali metal, e.g. sodium or potassium, an alkaline earth metal, e.g. calcium, or ammonium. The temperature used may be in the range -25 to +25 DEG C., and pressure is necessary above the boiling point of sulphur dioxide. Preferred salts are sodium sulphite and chloride. In the examples: (1) benzenesulphonic acid and (2) benzenedisulphonic acid are neutralized with sodium sulphite.
