Abstract

Non-cohering free-flowing potassium nitrate crystals are produced by depositing on the surfaces of the crystals, by evaporation from aqueous solution, a dyestuff of sulphonated aromatic character such that when dissolved in a hot saturated aqueous solution of the nitrate, the crystals which begin to appear on cooling are in thin fragile plate-like form. 0.01-0.10 parts dyestuff per 100 parts nitrate may be used. In examples: (1) the nitrate is crystallized by cooling a saturated solution at 40 DEG C. containing a dyestuff, and the crystals with adhering mother liquor are dried; (2) ground nitrate is mixed with an aqueous solution of a dyestuff and dried; (3) a solution of a dye is sprayed over wet small crystals, and the mixture dried. Particularly suitable dyestuffs are 1 : 4-diaminoanthraquinone - 2 - sodium - sulphonate and 1 : 4 : 5 : 8-tetramino-anthraquinone disulphonic acid (sodium salt); other examples are listed.
