Abstract

1:4 - Dihydro - 2 - mercapto - 4:4:6 - trimethylpyrimidine - 1 - p - benzoic acid is prepared by heating p-amino-benzoic acid and 2-methyl-2-thiocyano-4-pentanone in water acidified with sulphuric acid. By using other amino compounds in place of p-amino-benzoic acid other 1-derivatives are obtained. Thus from m-amino benzoic acid, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, amino-isophthalic acid or methyl hydrazine is obtained respectively the 1-m-benzoic acid, 1-hydroxy, 1-(3:5-dicarboxyphenyl), or 1-methylamino derivatives. 1 - Phenyl - 2 - mercapto - 4 - methyl - 6 - hydroxy - 1:4 - dihydropyrimidine is prepared by shaking b -amino-butyric acid and phenyl isothiocyanate in water containing sodium hydroxide. 1:4 - Dihydro - 2 - mercapto - 4:4:6 - trimethylpyrimidine is prepared by refluxing ammonium thiocyanate and mesityl oxide in toluene and continuously removing the water formed.
