Abstract

656,041. Stuffing-box packing. GILLARD, A. W., BARAND, Ltd., and BARLTROP, E. W. Dec. 23. 1948. No. 33129. [Class 122(v)] A packing unit more especially for condenser tubes comprises a tubular compressible metal foil element 2 and an expansible tubular element 1 of compressed fibrous material, both elements having substantially the same outside and inside diameter and being connected together in end to end relation by an interengaging formation including transversely interengaged surfaces disposed to resist axial separation of the elements. A groove 3 and a taper 4 are formed in a reduced part of the fibre element 1 and the metallic and fibre elements are compressed together so that the metal flows into the groove 3. Two similar fibre elements may be connected to opposite ends of a metallic element. In a condenser tube stuffing box assembly two packing units may be used, the first being inserted with the fibre element inwards and the second with the fibre element outwards, the metallic elements being thereby protected from the circulating liquid by the outer fibre element.
