Abstract
In making sugar or syrups the raw juices obtained by diffusing beet or cane at temperatures below 50 DEG C, e.g. 35 to 38 DEG C, are acted on by ion-exchangers, e.g. a carbonaceous cation-exchanger which may be followed by a resinous anion-exchanger of the amino-formaldehyde type. Sulphurous acid may be present during diffusion. Colloidal impurities may be coagulated and/or precipitated (and so removed) before the juices meet the ion-exchanger by acidifying the raw juice, e.g. with sulphuric acid at 20 DEG C or with some of the effluent from the cation-exchange treatment. U.S.A. Specification 2,403,177 is referred to.
