Abstract
A process of purifying an aqueous solution containing a sugar including sugar juices and sugar syrups comprises passing said solution through an ion exchange purification system to remove at least 50 per cent of non-sugar solids in the solution, adding about 0.01-0.1 per cent of phosphoric acid calculated as P2O5 and based upon the total remaining solids in the solution, adjusting the pH to about 6-8, e.g. by lime, and removing coagulated and precipitated material from said solution. In one example a raw sugar cane juice of 16.66 DEG Brix was passed through three pairs of beds of ion exchangers, the first in each case being a cation exchanger. To the treated juice is added 0.02 per cent H3PO4 in the form of an aqueous solution containing 10-20 per cent ortho phosphoric acid, the mixture is agitated and milk of lime about 10 DEG Baum<\>e added to bring the pH to about 7.3-7.4 and heated to 185-215 DEG F to bring about coagulation and is then run into a settling tank or clarifier. The juice is drawn off, filtered if necessary, and evaporated to 55-65 DEG Brix mixed with 0.02 per cent vegetable carbon if desired to remove colour and filtered to leave a clear colourless sugar syrup.
