Abstract
Raw sugar juices are defecated and purified by treating them with the optimum economical quantity of lime calculated to produce an effective precipitation of the impurities and to ensure a ready separation thereof on subsequent filtration, the addition being made at a low temperature and followed by a rapid heating. The juice is then treated with an electrolyte, such as aluminium sulphate, in an amount adapted to fix and disperse the remaining colouring matter and colloidal impurities and the necessary quantity of a suitable acid reagent is added to impart the requisite degree of alkalinity required for the usual subsequent working after filtration. Thus, lime in amount of 0,5 per cent of the weight of fresh beet is added to raw juice at 40-50 DEG C. and the juice is then heated to about 75 DEG C. Aluminium sulphate in amount of 0,3 per cent of the weight of fresh beet is added, and the subsequent acid treatment is effected by calcium phosphate, carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide so as to bring the pH value of the juice to 7,5-8 if the juice is to be concentrated and sulphited or to 7 if the juice is only to be treated with decolorizing carbon.
