Abstract
Amino acids, betaine and pyrrolidone carboxylic acids are recovered from molasses by passing first through a cation exchange resin which absorbs the amino compounds which are recovered by eluting with NH4OH and then passing the effluent through an anion exchange resin from which the pyrrolidone carboxylic acid is recovered by eluting with NH4OH or mineral acid.ALSO:Aqueous beet molasses containing substantially unhydrolized pyrrolidone carboxylic acid is treated by passing through a cation exchange resin, which is later washed with water and then treated with NH4OH to give a solution of amino compounds, and thereafter passing the effluent from the exchanger through an anion exchange resin and washing the anion exchange resin with inorganic basic solution, e.g. NH4OH or mineral acid, e.g. H2SO4, to recover the pyrrolidone carboxylic acid and concentrating the effluent from the anion exchanger to a syrupy consistency.
