Abstract

Streptomycin is recovered from an aqueous solution thereof by contacting the solution with an ion exchange resin deriving its exchange capacity from carboxylic groups, and eluting the adsorbed streptomycin with an electrolyte solution, e.g. an acid such as hydrochloric acid, or a solution of calcium chloride. The resin, which is preferably employed in the form of a column, may subsequently be regenerated for use in a further adsorption. Sometimes this may be accomplished simultaneously with elution, but it is preferably effected by treatment with alkali, especially ammonium hydroxide, in order to place the resin on the cation cycle. In an example, a carboxylic acid ion exchange resin is placed in a column, washed with hydrochloric and then with water, and treated with ammonium hydroxide followed by again washing with water, a filtered broth from a Streptomyces griseus fermentation is passed through the column, which is then again washed with water and eluted with hydrochloric acid, the eluate is neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution and diluted with methanol, and the streptomycin is precipitated by the addition of acetone. Specification 638,664 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of ion exchange resins other than those of the carboxylic acid type, e.g. those of the sulphonic acid and silicate types. Additional examples using these types are given. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
