Abstract

A method for the purification and concentration of crude carboxylic acids, particularly hydroxy-acids, comprises bringing a dilute aqueous solution of the carboxylic acid into contact with a basic anion exchange in the OH-form, eluting the carboxylic acid anions from the anion exchange by means of an aqueous elutant which comprises an acid which, at a temperature in the range between room temperature and the boiling point of the eluted aqueous solution of the carboxylic acid, can itself be volatalised from said eluted aqueous solution, or forms a gaseous anhydride which escapes from said eluted aqueous solution in this temperature range, and mainly regenerating the exchanger to the OH-form by treatment with hot water or steam. Suitable eluting acids include carbonic, sulphurous and formic acids. The eluting acid may be produced during the elution, e.g. by eluting with water and at the same time introduring the gaseous anhydride of the eluting acid, possibly under pressure. The anion exchanger is generally an anion exchange resin, usually containing primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups, but not usually the strongly basic quaternary amino groups. The hot water or steam-regenerated exchanger may be completely converted to the OH-form with alkali. In examples, citric acid and tartaric acid are purified.
