Abstract

Boric acid is recovered from aqueous nuclear reactor coolant by passing the coolant through a basic ion-exchange resin on which the boric acid is taken up, washing the resin with NH4OH to remove the boric acid, and boiling the effluent to drive off NH3. The resin is then washed with water and the NH3 is boiled off the effluent. The NH3 is collected and used again. The resin may be of the quaternary ammonium type, e.g. "Amberlite" and "Deacidite" (Trade Marks), and is preferably maintained at 50-60 DEG C. during NH4OH washing. 4N.NH4OH may be used.
