Abstract
Iodine is eluted from anion-exchange resins containing it by using aqueous NaOH solution as eluent, the residual iodine then being removed by elution with aqueous NaCl solution. The eluate from the elution step with NaCl may be chlorinated and acidified to produce elemental iodine crystals which are removed by filtration; the NaCl-containing filtrate, with or without neutralization with NaOH, is reused for elution of residual iodine. This filtrate, before being re-used for elution, may be treated with activated carbon to remove dissolved iodine; the activated carbon carrying the removed iodine is contacted with aqueous NaOH to liberate iodine, the iodine-containing solution is neutralized with acid and chlorinated whereby elemental iodine crystallizes out and is separated by filtration. The anion exchange resin may be a weakly basic resin on a strongly basic quaternary ammonium resin, e.g. "Amberlite" (Trade Mark).
