Abstract
Thorium values are recovered from aqueous acidic solution, preferably uranium-free and with pH 1.0 to 2.5, by contacting with a waterinsoluble resin, e.g. of granular material, having N-containing substituents which co-ordinate thorium; rinsing with water, and eluting with mineral acid. The solution containing thorium, yttrium and iron is passed down or forced up through a resin bed, at a rate of 0.1 to 2 ml./ min./gm. of resin. The resin may be a vinyl-benzyl resin containing a -amino carboxylic acid (e.g. iminodiacetic acid) groups, or polyalkylene polyamine (e.g. diethylene triamine) groups, e.g. dimethyl sulphonium chloride cross-linked with divinylbenzene-formaldehyde-diethylene-triamine. Adsorbed thorium is eluted and may be freed from iron by recycling over the resin or by treating with aqueous HF to precipitate ThF4.xH2O. Yttrium may be recovered from the initial effluent by subsequent adsorption of a cation-exchange resin.
