Abstract

Uranium and/or thorium values are recovered from suspended solids occuring in natural waters associated with mineral oil deposits, by separating the solids, optionally calcining to destroy organic matter, and dissolving with hydrochloric acid. The solution is then contacted with an anion exchange resin which takes up uranium and/or thorium complex anions. Elution may be effected with N hydrochloric acid. After initial dissolution of the solids in hydrochloric acid, ascorbic acid may be added and the pH adjusted to 4 to 5 with ammonia to form an ascorbinate complex which is treated with an anion exchanger as before. In an example, mud is settled from oil well liquor, calcined and dissolved in 4N hydrochloric acid. Solid ascorbic acid is added to reduce ferric iron to ferrous, and the solution contacted with an artificial anion-exchange resin which has been pretreated with 4N hydrochloric acid containing a minor amount of ascorbic acid. Elution is effected with N hydrochloric acid and the eluate evaporated and calcined to uranium oxide.
