655,655. Optical apparatus for gauging dimensions. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Dec. 31, 1948, No. 33663. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] The thickness of a transparent sheet 10, Fig. 1, is measured by an optical wedge 13 receiving light R reflected from the sheet 10, the optical thickness of the wedge varying over a range that includes the optical thickness of the transparent sheet so that an interference pattern may be observed near the point where the optical thickness of the wedge is equal to the optical thickness of the sheet. A scale 13 may be attached to the wedge so that thicknesses may be indicated directly by the position of the interference pattern. The wedge, Fig. 3, may comprise a pair of optical flats 14, 15 disposed at an angle to each other to provide an air or liquid wedge between them, the lower face 23 of flat 14 having a partly mirrored surface and the upper face 24 of flat 15 having a fully mirrored surface. Alternatively the wedge may be of glass with its upper surface partly mirrored and its lower surface fully mirrored.
