Abstract

655,583. Sealing and severing filled tubes of thermoplastic material. JOHNSON, W. T. Aug. 27, 1948, No. 22624. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In a machine for heat-sealing and severing filled tubes of thermoplastic material in which a sealing device and a severing device operate in synchronism, the cutting jaw of the severing device comprises a metallic body portion, a detachable or renewable knife blade (or blades) held in position by gripping blocks embraced by a frame secured to the body portion, and an electric heating element enclosed in the body portion so that the knife or knives may be heated to facilitate clean cutting. The cutting ja,w shown is adapted to sever two tubes fed side-by-side and comprises a straight knife 15 for severing the bottoms of the tubes and two shaped knives 16 for cutting-out the shoulder and neck portions of the tubes. The knives are clamped in position by brass blocks 17-20 secured by screws 21 and formed with inclined peripheral faces which are engaged by an inclined internal face on a frame 22 secured to the body 12, 13. The upper part 13 of the body is recessed to receive an electric heating element 14. The co-operating jaw of the severing device comprises a block of synthetic resin and/or compressed fibre formed with grooves for the reception of the edges of the knives.
