Abstract

655,566. Thermionic valves. HIVAC, Ltd. Nov. 20, 1947, No. 30854. [Class 39 (i)] In a filament mounting arrangement for a thermionic valve, of the type in which the anode comprises opposed parallel planar surfaces on either side of the filament whereby the principal direction of electron travel when the valve is in operation is substantially normal to said planar anode surfaces, a single limb filament wire is held under tension by its attachment at one end to a spring which is formed as a strip of metal whose cross-section has a width dimension several times greater than its thickness, said spring being of generally flat or only slightly bowed form and being disposed so as to lie with its length dimension substantially at right angles to the filament wire, and its width dimension substantially at right angles to the filament wire and parallel to said principal direction of electron travel. The filament wire 10 is held between a fixed support lug 11 and a cantilever spring 12 and passes through triangular holes in mica spacing plates 13 and 14, provided with projections 27 to locate the electrode assembly in the surrounding envelope. Support-lug 11 is a substantially L-shaped metal stamping, rigidly secured by means of bent-over tongues 18 to the lowermost of two superposed mica layers forming the lower spacing plate 14. Two layers of mica are used so that the lower edge of the anode (not shown) will be insulated from the tongues 18. The filament is connected, for example by welding, to the lug 11 through the intermediary of a metal tag 19, to which is also welded the end of a connecting-wire 20. The spring 12 has a downturned portion 21 to which is welded a metal tag 22 connected, as by welding, to the filament wire, and is welded at its opposite end to one limb of a U-shaped metal plate 23, the other limb of which is welded to one of the support rods 24 of the suppressor grid structure. The position and tension of the spring 12 may be adjusted by bending the plate 23. In a possible modification, the tensioning spring is connected at each end to fixed members and the filament wire is attached to its centre.
