655,294. Gear generating machine. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. March 1, 1949, No. 5595. Convention date, April 19, 1948. [Class 83 (iii)] A gear-shaping cutter comprises a rack having rigid teeth 122 provided with cutting- edges, and a flexible web 123 connecting the rack to a rigid supporting bar 120. The. cutter is secured to a slide 18 reciprocated by a crank 40 rotated by an electric motor 11. Cutting takes place on both strokes, the tool being supported at the correct angle by abutments 127. The tool-head 14 is set over when cutting helical gears. A worm 60 is also rotated by the motor 11 to traverse a workslide 30 along a second slide 27 which is fed towards the cutter by a screw 87 rotated through change-gears 80, 81. Rotation of the worm 60 and the screw 87 is reversed by a clutch 62. A clutch 83 disengages the screw 87. The gear-blank 32 is rotated by a maste r rack 106 and gear 105. At the end of a traverse, the gear 105 runs off on to a subsidiary rack which is moved through one tooth-space by pneumatic means to index the blank. Specification 655,251 is referred to.
