[Class 83 (iii)] In a machine of the reciprocating rack-cutter type for generating helical gears, the ram carrying the cutter may be adjusted according to the helical angle required and the tool 10 is mounted in a holder 6 which is angularly adjustable about an axis perpendicular to the cutting movement, so that the tool which has its teeth at the required helical angle may always be set with its length extending perpendicular to the blank axis. In this way the necessary axial space between two gears 11 of a cluster or between the parts of a double helical gear may be kept at a minimum for gears of all helical angles. The tool holder support 3 has pivotal relieving movement about an axis 4 perpendicular to the ram guides and the tool holder is clamped in adjusted position by bolts 7 engaging in a circular groove 5.
