Oct. 2, 1935, No. 27207. Addition to 407,950. [Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXIII] The machine for relieving hobs &c. described in the parent Specification is modified by the provision of means for eliminating the backlash in the gearing driving the table lead-screw 1 so that the tool may operate on the work 25 during both forward and return strokes of the work-table 24. The lead-screw has an extension 3 carrying splined bushes 4, 5, supporting the members 8, 9 which together form a piston located between end flanges on the bushes. An annular member 10 located in a recess in the piston is screwed to members 11, 12 forming a fixed cylinder. A fixed sleeve 15 on the member 8 is screwed to receive a nut 16 which may be rotated by worm gearing 17 to adjust the clearance 18 between the piston and the nut face. Clearance chambers are also provided at 19, 20 and 21. Pressure fluid may be admitted selectively either to the pipe 23 and chambers 19, 21 or to pipe 22 and chambers 18, 20. In operation, during movement of the work-table to the left, Fig. 1, the chambers 19, 21 are open to pressure and the lead-screw is held in its left-hand position against the nut 16. On reversal of the worktable, the pressure is transferred to chambers 18, 20, thus moving the piston and lead-screw to the right to compensate for the backlash in the driving train. The movement is adjusted by means of the nut 16 which, for ordinary one-way working may be set so as entirely to prevent the piston movement.
