Abstract
372,712. Gear-cutting. AEPPLI, A., 219, Hardstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland. Jan. 20, 1932, No. 1800. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1931. [Class 83 (iii).] In an attachment 2 designed to render a gear-cutting machine, such as that described in Specification 109,256, [Class 83 (iii), Metals, Cutting], in which external gears are generated by means of a reciprocating rack-cutter 1a, applicable to the generating of internal gears 10, the rack-tool is replaced by a pinion-cutter 7 which is rotated in unison with the blank so that its pitch circle rolls on the blank pitch circle. The attachment is adjustably secured by screws to the ram 1 of the machine and has bearings for a shaft 3 on which is pivoted a housing 4 provided with bearings for a vertical shaft 6 carrying the pinion-cutter. The cutter position during operation is determined by a machined surface 5 on the housing which engages a corresponding surface on the attachment body. The work-table 11 is normal!y rotated from a shaft 16 through bevel gearing 15, change-wheels 14, shaft 36, and worm gearing 13. The pinion-cutter is driven from the shaft 16 through bevel gearing 19, vertical shaft 17, bevel gearing 18, shaft 3, and worm gearing 9. In working normally with a racktooth cutter the blank table is moved laterally in unison with its rotation by means of a shaft 22. When the attachment is used this lateral movement is not required and the gear 21 engaging one of the change-wheels 14 is accordingly disconnected. The generating movement is effected during the return stroke of the ram and in order to remove the tools from the work during the return the machine frame is fitted with friction-blocks 44 engaging a rod 26 connected by an arm 25 to a cam shaft journalled in the body of the attachment and carrying a cam 23. During the working stroke the arm 25 is dragged upwardly and forces the cam 23 against a projection on the housing so that its stop surface engages the surface of the attachment but during the return movement the cam engages a projection 42 on the housing 4 thus lifting the housing and the cutter away from the work.
