Abstract
185,916. Sunderland, S., and Midgley, A. M. July 22, 1921. Gear-cutting.-A shaping-machine for cutting the teeth on racks by means of a multiple cutter or for performing like operations, has a wedge feeding-mechanism and a rectilinear indexing-device. The cutter c is reciprocated in a vertical plane by means of fast and loose pulleys, gearing, and a Whitworth quick-return motion. The blank m<2> is mounted on a table m, and is fed towards the tool by a wedge m<4> having rack teeth engaging a pinion rotated through gearing o<4> and a worm drive from a belt pulley o<1>, connected to the main drive shaft. An adjustable screw m<5> on the wedge contacts with an adjustable block n on the machine framing to limit the depth of feed, a friction drive in the feed train being caused to slip. When one set of teeth has been cut, the table is traversed to the position for the next set to be cut by a screw m<1>, operated by hand or power, until two stops s<3>, on the table and framing respectively, make contact. The stops are set at the correct distance apart by a gauge rod s<4>.
