Abstract
655,260. Windscreen-cleaners. PRODUCTIVE INVENTIONS, Inc. July 22, 1947, No. 19652. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1942. [Class 138(i)] [Also in Group XXV] A means for connecting a windscreen-wiper blade unit to a windscreen-wiper arm unit includes a connector means attachable to one unit for receiving an entering part on the .other unit, a movable member associated with the connector means, and yieldable means urging the member to a locking position, the member having means for receiving the entering part when it is received in the connector means whereby to assist in holding the connector means pivotally connected to the entering part. A connector member 22, Fig. 1, is fixed to the end of a wiper arm 21 by means of a rivet 24 and a lug 25 on the base 23 of the member 22 engaging in an opening 26 in the arm. The base 23 is provided with side walls each having depending portions 27. 'Each side wall is provided between the portions 27 with an inwardly turned lug 28. A locking apparatus 32, Fig. 3, having side walls 37, 38 (38, not shown), is fitted to the wiper blade frame 31, and is provided with an entrance way 39 to receive the lugs 28. Slidably fitted within the locking apparatus 32 is a bolt 41, Fig. 6, provided with a handle 44, 45 and a catch member, Fig. 7. The bolt and catch are interconnected by lugs 52, 53, Fig. 7, of the catch engaging with notches 49, 51, Fig. 6, of the bolt. A spring 61 is interposed between the catch member and an end wall 35 of the locking apparatus 32. In the unlocked position shown in Fig. 3, the bolt 41 is retained in a position to the right of the entranceway 39 by the shoulders 58, 59. Fig. 7, of the catch engaging portion of the other end wall 36 of the locking apparatus 32. The catch is snapped into the unlocked position by virtue of the angular relationship between its end face 55, Fig. 7, and its base 54. On inserting the lugs 28 into the entranceway 39 they engage the base 54 and cause the catch to move downwardly and release the shoulders 58. 59. The spring 61 then urges the catch and bolt to the left, the side walls 56, 57, Fig. 7. of the catch passing through the wall 36. so that the bolt 41 seals the entranceway 39 to cause the member 22 to be locked to the wiper blade, as shown in Fig. 1. In a modification, Fig. 8, a connector member 64 is pivotally connected to an arm 63 by a rivet 65, which member is provided with a transverse pin 67 instead of lugs. The base of the member 64 may be attached or integral with one of the arms of a parallelogram arrangement which operates to hold the wiper blade throughout its movement in a predetermined direction with respect to the windscreen. The catch and bolt with handle are integral and are controlled by a spring 89. In' the unlocked position shown in Fig. 9, the bolt is retained to the right by lugs 87, 88 (87, not shown), engaging with the end of the base of the locking apparatus 72 fitted to the blade frame. When the pin 67 is inserted in the entranceway 78 it engages a portion 81 of the combined catch and bolt and moves it downwardly so that the lugs 87, 88, are released from the locking apparatus frame. The catch and bolt are then urged to the left so that a portion 79 of the catch and bolt seals the entranceway 78 and locks the connector member to the wiper blade as shown in Fig. 8. Specifications 644,048, 650,311, 655.259 and 655,261 are referred to.
