Abstract

864,191. Fifth wheel vehicle couplings. DAVIES MAGNET WORKS Ltd., and DAVIES, P. M. Feb. 6, 1959 [Feb. 7, 1958], No. 4157/58. Class 103(5). A fifth wheel coupling comprising a plate 1 mounting king pin jaws 2 pivoted at 3 and a spring pressed plunger 6 adapted to enter narrowing recesses 5 in the jaws 2, is provided with means for locking the plunger 6 in the operative position. An arm 10 pivoted at 11 to the plate 1 is pin connected at 12 to the plunger 6 which is provided with a lock engaging boss 21, and a lug or recess 6b engageable when the plunger is raised by a nose 6c on a' pivoted spring loaded lever 6d. A bridge 13 on the plate 1 provides an angled guideway 15 for a slidable locking bar 16 which may be pulled outwardly by a handle 17 against a spring 18. The boss 21 on the plunger 6 may be engaged in the locked and unlocked positions by the end 22 of the locking bar 16 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. To unlock the coupling from the Fig. 1 position the lever 17 is first pulled to withdraw the bar 16 and engage a stop 16a thereon with a nose 23 on a pivoted bell crank lever 24. The arm 10 is then pivoted clockwise until the lug 6b and the plunger 6 are held against the spring 7 by the pivoted lever 6d. As the arm 10 is so moved a pin 27 thereon contacts the other arm 26 of the bell crank 24 to pivot the lever and release the stop 16a from the recess 23. The released bar 16 then moves on the guide 15 until its end face 28 abuts the side 29 of the boss 21 on the plunger 6. When the king pin leaves the now unlocked jaws, the jaws pivot to an open position and rotate the lever 6d which releases the, plunger and allows it to move downwardly and abut the end faces 5b of the jaws as in Fig. 2. When recoupling takes place the king pin abuts the jaw surfaces 4a, pivots the jaws to a closed position and permits the plunger to enter the recesses 5, the boss 21 moving downwardly so that the bar 16 may snap into locking position above it as in Fig. 1.
