655,254. Testing by vibrations. WEST & CO., Ltd., A., and BREEZE, V. L. June 12, 1947, No. 15517. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for causing devices to vibrate for the purpose of testing them comprises a bar mounted to constitute a cantilever for supporting the device to be vibrated, means for varying the length of the cantilever to adjust the resonant frequency thereof and an electromagnet adapted to be energized at the resonant frequency of the cantilever to vibrate the cantilever, whereby the frequency of vibration to which the device is subjected may be varied by varying the length of the cantilever and correspondingly adjusting the energization of the electromagnet to the resonant frequency. The cantilever bar 1 is of steel and is clamped between upper and lower rollers 3, 4. The upper rollers are rotatably mounted between plates 8 slidable relatively to outer plates 5, in which the lower rollers 4 are rotatably mounted, under control of a screw 11 threaded in a fixed bossed plate 12 and rotatable by means of a hand lever 14. In order to adjust the length of the cantilever, the rollers 4 carry gears 15 meshing with a pinion 16 on a shaft rotatable by means of radial arms 18. The electromagnet 2 is supplied from a commutator driven by a synchronous motor or with an amplified current derived from a coil mounted on the bar and in a fixed magnetic field. The bar may be rigidly mounted at its fixed end, in which case a single pair of rollers is mounted for horizontal movement along the bar in order to vary the cantilever length. According to the Provisional Specification, the rollers may be grooved to fit the cantilever bar.
