Abstract

655,063. Treating wood. HUDSON, M. S. Jan. 26, 1948, No. 2273. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1942. Addition to 655,062. [Class 140] [Also in Group XIII] In a modification of the method of drying wood described in the parent Specification the condensed drying medium is returned to the drying chamber in vapour phase. The wood is placed in a drying chamber A supplied with vapour from an evaporator B through a manifold C and line LV-1. The chamber is connected to a second manifold D communicating through line LV-2 with a dephlegmator or partial condenser E which is connected to the evaporator B. Water-free organic drying medium may pass directly from the bottom section of the dephlegmator to the evaporator or to a condensate return tank G through lines LL-1 or LL-18. Heat is supplied to the evaporator through heating coils K heated by steam, oil or other means through heat absorber M. The returned condensate may be preheated by passage through the hot tube section E<SP>1</SP> of the dephlegmator E. The temperature in the drying chamber may be controlled by means of a thermostatic device having a bulb a<SP>1</SP> in the chamber and controlling the heat absorber M. The dephlegmator E is connected to a condenser N and funnel H which separates the water from the drying medium, the latter being delivered to the evaporator or to the tank G. The term wood includes plywood, pulps, wood powders, &c. and treatments include plasticizing, dyeing, fire-proofing, pulping and impregnation. Impregnation, e.g. with creosote, may be effected after the drying cycle, in the same apparatus.
