[Class 36] A glass base for an electron discharge device is made by inserting lead-in conductors 3 in apertures in a die 2, surrounding them with a length 4 of hard glass tubing and placing a cup-shaped element 5 of glass on the die 2 so that the base of the cup rests on the die with a small contact area. The assembly is then heated to make the glass parts 4 and 5 plastic and a die 1 is brought towards the die 2 to shape the glass to the desired configuration. Owing to the small contact area between the glass 5 and the die 2, the conduction of heat away from the glass is reduced.
