Abstract
654,705. Cathode ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 17, 1948, Nos. 16261/48, 16262/48 and 7712/49. [Class 56] A step in the manufacture of a cathode ray tube comprises clamping a glass plate to a support extending around its periphery, heating the sheet until it becomes plastic and then causing distention of the plastic glass to form a portion of the tube. The distention may be produced by the glass sinking under its own weight, or a former may be forced into the plate when plastic (e.g. by carrying the clamp and the former in the headstock and tailstock respectively of a lathe), or by applying suction beneath, or air pressure above, the plate in a mould. The shaped part may be a conical or partly spherical side wall of the tube or a partly spherical end wall. Specification 3444/09, [Class 56], is referred to.
