Abstract

An elastic material suitable for covering walls is obtained by mixing cellulose fibre with rubber latex, waterglass and vulcanizing agents, shaping the mixture into desired form and then vulcanizing. The material is preferably formed by placing a layer of cellulose fibre of great absorptive power on a paper under-layer of great wet strength and then spraying the former with a solution containing 46 per cent rubber latex, 20 per cent caseinate glue, waterglass and vulcanizing agents. Tragacanth gum and dyes may also be added. The whole is then embossed and vulcanized. The upper layer may be made of cellulose paper, cotton wool or paper wadding-like substances in the form of sheets, flocks or cuttings. The upper layer may also be joined to the lower layer by an adhesive consisting of 48 per cent (by volume) of rubber latex, 12 per cent waterglass, 16 per cent caseinate glue and 4 per cent tragacanth gum.
