Abstract
654,573. Decorticating fibrous leaves. STEVENS, A. H. (Humbert, L.). Dec. 9, 1948, No. 31861. [Class 120(i)] A scraper drum for a decorticating machine e comprises at least two discs which are provided on their opposed side faces with blades which project laterally, the set of blades carried on one of the paired discs facing the set of blades carried on the other of said discs, the discs being relatively movable along their common axis of rotation to provide an adjustable gap between the opposed sets of blades. As shown the drum comprises three discs 1, 2 and 3 disposed on a common shaft 4, the outer discs 2 and 3 having sets of blades 5 and 6 which are opposed to blades 7 and 8 provided on either side of the central disc 1. Each of the outer discs 2 and 3 is capable of axial adjustment along the shaft 4 and in a circumferential direction around the shaft 4 in relation to the centre disc 1. One or both of a pair of discs may yield against spring resistance to provide, temporarily, a wider gap in order to prevent leaves jamming between the opposed blades.
