Abstract
909,408. Disc refiners. JONES CORPORATION, E. D. April 8, - 1960, No. 12553/60. Class 59. In a refiner comprising two sets of discs 1, 2 and 3, 4, the discs 1, 4 being stationary and the discs 2, 3 rotatable in the direction of the arrows a, the fibre stock being propelled outwardly between the discs 1, 2 and inwardly between the discs 3, 4 and the discs having working faces provided with blades 10 arranged in groups providing circumferential segments 11, opposite edges of the segments and extensions 12 thereof converge tangentially to a circle 13, the blades in each segment being arranged substantially parallel to one edge of the segment, the segment edges of the disc set 1, 2 being tangential to the circle 13 such that the inner ends of the edges lead the outer ends thereof in the direction of rotation of disc 2 the blades of which are substantially parallel to the trailing edges of its segments while the blades of disc 1 are substantially parallel to the leading edges of its segments in the direction of rotation of disc 2, and the segment edges of the disc set 3, 4 converging tangentially to the circle 13 such that the outer ends of the edges lead the inner ends thereof in the direction of rotation of disc 3 the blades of which are substantially parallel to the leading edges of its segments while the blades of disc 4 are substantially parallel to the trailing edges of its segments in the direction of rotation of disc 3, all the blades on one disc intersecting all the blades on the co-operating disc of each set at all rotational positions. To facilitate entry of the stock between discs 1, 2 and discharge from discs 3, 4, transport spaces 15, Fig. 2, are provided by terminating alternate blades inwardly, the inner ends of these blades being tapered at 17. Entry of the stock between discs 3, 4 at the peripheries thereof is assisted by bevelling inwardly at 18 the outer ends of alternate blades to provide entry passages. Further stock passages 19 are provided across the faces of all discs. The blades on the discs 1, 4 are wider than those on the corresponding discs 2, 3. The segment edges of the discs 2, 3 are offset tangentially from radial by about 5 to about 25 degrees, while the segment edges of the discs 1, 4 are offset tangentially by from about 0 to about 10 degrees in the same direction as the tangential offset of the segment edges of the discs 2, 3. The discs 1, 4, instead of being stationary, may be rotated in the same direction as, or opposite direction from, the discs 2, 3.
