Abstract

654,479. Moulding footwear with rubber soles. VANACKER, J. April 12, 1948, No. 10152. Convention date, May 22, 1946. [Class 87 (ii)] A mould for moulding rubber soles to uppers comprises an upper frame 23 to receive the upper, a base frame 22 to receive the sole material and a replaceable sole moulding plate 29 within the lower frame adapted to be held in position according to the thickness of sole required by set screws 14 threaded in bores in the frame 22 and bearing at their inner ends against the edge of the sole plate 29. An electric heating element 25 is embedded in the base frame. To enable soles of extra thickness to be moulded a removable spacer 16 may be provided to increase the height of the base frame. The sole plate 29 may be resiliently supported by springs 11. The screws 14 are released when the mould has been fitted and closed and the springs 11 then exert a moulding pressure against the sole material. Air and gas discharge conduits 10 may be provided in the upper frame. Spigots are provided on the lower frame for correctly locating the upper frame which has corresponding sockets. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts describes also a footwear mould, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), comprising a lower frame in two parts 1, 2 which form a housing for an electric heating element, and an upper frame 3. The part 2 is shaped at 30 to mould the sole to the required form. The upper and lower frames are registered by a groove 8 and rib 7. In a modification the part 2 is recessed to receive a removable sole moulding plate so that a variety of soles may be moulded in the same mould using different plates. The Specification also describes making a shoe with a composite sole, an upper resilient part and a lower wear-receiving part, the mixes for which are applied together in layers which may be of different thicknesses, calendered, and introduced while still in pasty form into the mould with the wear-receiving part. lowermost.
