Abstract

654,280. Carburetted water gas. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW, Ltd. Sept. 16, 1948, No. 24351. [Class 55(i)] In the manufacture of carburetted water gas using heavy oil, the fuel, before it reaches the level in the generator at which the oil is sprayed on to it, is preheated during a period including at least one complete uprun oil spraying phase by passage through it of hot uprun make gases and of hot blow gas and during the blow phase or phases of that period by combustion of blow gas with secondary air in contact with or in close proximity to the fuel being preheated, either before or after passing through it. The figure shows the upperpart of a generator to which the invention. is applied. A circular grate 10 rests on: blocks 12 projecting from the generator lining and supports the central portion of a mass of temporarily stored fuel, the marginal portion of the mass resting on the main bulk of fuel in the generator proper. Oil is sprayed in the space under the grate through a pipe 14. During the uprun, hot process gas passes through and preheats the stored fuel, whilst during the blow, the hot blow gases pass through the fuel, fur-- ther preheating being obtained by admitting secondary air through ports 16 to cause combustion in contact with the fuel on the: grate.
