Abstract

653,908. Transformers and inductances. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 20, 1948, No. 10857. Convention date, April 30, 1947. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A core for a transformer or other electric induction apparatus is formed from two sets of U-shaped laminations having unequal leg portions, the sets being assembled together so that the ends of the legs abut alternately at different levels. The laminations are sheared in varying lengths from magnetic steel strip, are re arranged to form a trapezoidal stack and then bent, as shown in Fig. 5, by a machine having a base 31, a pair of pivoted side-members 32, 33 and a mandrel 39. After annealing, the sets are rearranged and assembled as shown in Fig. 11, the ends of the legs abutting at 112 and 116. The lengths of the laminations may be graded so that either sharp equal corners 127, Fig. 11, are produced, or corners, see Fig. 14, of increasing radius inwards, or rounded corners, see Fig. 17, or so that a tolerance 137, Fig. 13, is allowed between the yoke portions in order to ensure abutting of the ends of the legs. By first bending one leg only of the U-shape, moving the laminations to separate the leg portions slightly, see Fig. 17, and then bending the other leg, a tolerance is provided on the leg portions to enable the sets to nest more easily.
