653,506. Load-handling apparatus; marshalling vehicles; traversers. AUGER, H. June 3, 1947, Nos. 14623 and 17515. Addition to 653,492. [Classes 78 (iii), 78 (iv), and 104 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A modification of the mechanism of the parent Specification for moving a load from one position of rest to another with low initial acceleration and final deceleration comprises a carriage 1, Fig. 1, having pulleys 3 around which a flexible band or cable 7 is looped, the ends of the band or cable being anchored at 9 and 10. A second driving band or cable 8 passes round a driving drum 11, an idler 12 and the pulleys 3 so that on rotation of the drum 11 the pulleys 3 are rotated and the carriage rolls along the band 7. A link 4 is coupled to a point 5 on the band 7 which is moved in a path as shown dotted, the beginning and end of which are cycloidal curves. The other end 6 of the link 4 is adapted to be connected to a load to move it with low initial acceleration up to a constant speed and then reduce the speed down to a low final deceleration. Various different arrangements of the bands 7 and 8 are described. In application to the storage equipment described'in the parent Specification, in which ranks of platforms are adapted to be moved as required, the drive modulating carriage 40, 41 is arranged with the cable pulleys 42, Fig. 7, horizontal so that the mechanism is contained within a very small vertical height. Guide pulleys 44, 45 are provided for running in suitable guide-rails. Mechanisms for two ranks of platforms may be connected by a suitable arrangement of driving cables to a common driving gear conveniently located to the side of the ranks.
