Abstract

1,229,863. Gas cushion vehicles; rope railways. HOVERMARINE Ltd. 7 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 11340/68. Headings B7K and B7L. In a transport system for conveyance of passengers and/or freight between a pair of stations, a platform 5 is supported on one or more gas cushions and is guided by cable means 9 extending between the stations. The cable co-operates with pulleys 25, 26, 27, 28, the pulley 26 being driven by a driving unit 29 to propel the platform. The gas cushion is contained within a flexible skirt 8 comprising flexible wall members 17 of the type disclosed in Specification 1,043,351 and a loop 18 extending between points 19 on the wall members and points 20 on the platform 5, the inner upper portions of the wall members being attached to the undersurface of the platform at points 21. In a modification, Fig. 3, the cable 9 is effectively endless passing round pulleys 35, 36, the pulley 36 being rotated by an endless belt driven by a reversible engine to guide and propel the platform. In a further modification, the gas cushion is contained by a fluid curtain or by a combination of a fluid curtain and flexible skirt.
