Target apparatus for "hoop-1a" comprises a tank 1 in which float objects 18 connected by submerged mechanism to. means for giving the objects a forward motion and for imparting to the objects a superimposed auxiliary motion, which may be a sideways motion of the whole object or a submerging motion of the whole object or a part thereof, or both. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a central pillar 2 has mounted thereon two sets 5, 6 of spokes having wheels 4 running on guides 3 and rotated at different speeds by means, not shown. Each object is connected by mechanism 17, 16, 11 to a carriage 9 guided by rollers 10 on a rail 7 rotating with the spokes 6. A loop in the link 11 engages a spoke 5 to rotate the object about the pillar 2 and, because the rail 6 is non-circular in shape, the objects perform a non-circular orbit. Different objects 18 may be guided by rails of different shape. The link 16 is connected by links 15, 13 to a roller 14, which at appropriate points of its orbit is engaged by a cam 21 which raises the roller to cause the front part of the object to be temporarily submerged. As shown in Fig. 3, the objects are traversed to and fro between points E and F by a cable 35 driven by a reversing device 42. The object is connected by a cord 36 to a crank arm of a member 32 which engages the cable and also has a squared aperture engaging a squared rod 31 which is partially rotated at intervals by a cord 40 connected to a lever 41 operated by cams or the like to submerge the front of the object. As shown in Fig. 5, the objects are connected by a cord 61 to a towing cable 50 guided by pulleys 53 on a weighted beam 54 and driven by a reversing device 60. The bights of the cables 50 pass over pulleys on a bracket 59 which is moved upwardly at appropriate intervals to allow the beam 54 to descend and thus submerge the objects. The liquid in the tank may be agitated and may be dyed to conceal the towing mechanism.
