Abstract
673,559. Propelling ships. CRABALONA. V. June 19, 1950 [June 21, 1949], No. 15280/50. Classes 113 (ii) and 114. [Also in Group XXXI] An endless track for amphibious vehicles comprises a chain each link of which carries a movable blade which can occupy two positions, one for propelling through water or a retracted position, which is assumed automatically by contact of the blades with the ground when the vessel lands, for travelling overland. A guide plate may be provided which ensures that the blades assume the retracted position whilst travelling over the guide and driving drums, and along the upper run between the drums. Figs. 1 and 3 show the vehicle with pedal-operated driving drums 5 for the endless track 1, but the track may be powerdriven. The drive to either track may be declutched by lever 12, to permit sharp turning movements of the vehicle. Water-tight compartments 6 may be provided within the tracks, and the two compartments may be in communication with one another. The track comprises a chain to the links of which are pivoted blades 2, Fig. 6, haying upper projections 8. Fig. 6 shows the position assumed by the blades when travelling in water. As the vehicle approaches land the blades 2 are turned by contact with the land into the position shown in Fig. 7, and the vehicle progresses over land with the blades in the retracted position. The blades are also caused to retract whilst passing round the drums 4, 5 and along the upper run between them by a guide plate 7, which engages the projections 8 as each blade reaches the rear end of its lower run, and which keeps the projections 8 depressed until the blade again reaches the lower run at the front.
