[Class 83 (iv)] In a rolling mill a number of rolls, each supported in a separate carrier, are inserted into or removed from the housings as a single unit by interconnecting the carriers. In a three-high rolling mill the lower roll 23 rests on chocks 25a, 25b at each end of a carrier 26 supported by vertically adjustable screws 36 in the roll housings. The centre roll 18 rests on chocks 19a, 19b at each end of a second carrier 22 having legs 43 which straddle the lower roll and carrier and rest upon horizontal faces 44 or adjustable wedges (not shown), on the bases of the roll housings 28. Ledges 66 at the base of the legs 43 contact the under face of the carrier 26 so that it may be lifted therewith. The upper roll 10 rests on bearings 14 supported by springs 16 located on U-shaped riders 17 sliding in each housing 28 and carrying antifriction liners 48 for the centre roll on their under faces through which they are supported. Vertical pressure on the bearings 48 of the centre roll may be adjusted by means of movable wedges 49 in the frame engaging sloping faces 51 at the upper ends of the riders 17. The upper roll carrier 35 carrying chocks 11a, 11b at each end may be similarly adjusted by interconnected screw-downs 33 carried on a head 31 bolted to the top of each housing. For the removal of the rollers the riders 17 and the centre roll carrier 22 are connected by links 63 at each corner so that on removal of the head 31 and lifting the riders 17 by crane hooks at holes 68 the carrier 22 will be raised through the links 63 and the lower roll carrier 26 through the ledges 66. The lower and upper roll carriers 26, 35 are longitudinally adjusted relative to the housing 28 by bolts 67, 42, the end flanges of the carriers being vertically slotted to permit relative vertical movement. The centre roll carrier 22 is secured in the housings by keepers 45 bolted over its end plates. All the rollers are longitudinally adjustable within the carriers by bolts 38, 46, 53 at each end of the carriers which engage the ends of the roll chocks. Specification 648,727 is referred to.
