Abstract

652,537. Lathes. FISCHER AKT.-GES., G. Aug. 3, 1948, No. 20509. Convention date, March 24. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe having a hollow bed and superimposed slideways to take a saddle and a tailstock, has.the headstock rigidly secured to the bed at the level of the spindle axis, but, has limited movement for expansion relative to the bed at the other points where it is secured thereto. The hollow bed 2 has an upper slideway along which the tailstock 3, Fig. 1, is axially adjustable and a guideway 8 along which the saddle 5 is moved by rack-andpinion gearing through a feed-shaft driven from the headstock 1. A tool-slide 6 is mounted obliquely on the saddle and is fed by fluid means under control of copying mechanism including a model or template 10. The headstock 1, Fig. 3, is rigidly secured by dowel pins 48 at the level of the machine spindle 47, but, is secured to the bed 2 by bolts 49, 50, at other points so that the headstock may have limited movement relative to the bed under expansion. An airspace 51 is provided between the vertical securing faces and a further air space 52 or insulating material is provided between the lower face of the headstock and the base 14. The feed gearing for traversing the saddle is driven from a fluted tubular feed-shaft.
