Abstract

652,305. Securing railway rails. USINE DES RESSORTS DU NORD. March 18, 1948, Nos. 8076 and 8077. Convention dates, April 5, 1947, and Jan. 2, 1948. [Class 104 (ii)] A resilient device for fixing railway rails to sleepers comprises a spring-metal blade bent over and around to form an eye 1 and two superposed arms 2, 3 of unequal length, both arms being provided with a hole 4 through which a securing bolt 9, or a coach screw, is passed when the fastener is positioned with the longer arm 2 seated upon the flange 7 at one side of the rail and the end of the shorter arm 3 in abutment with the edge b of the flange, the eye 1 being seated within a recess or hollow 12 of corresponding shape provided in the sleeper 6. The bolt-holes 4 are of larger diameter than the bolt to permit the arms to be moved slightly into the clamping position when the bolt is tightened. A capping member 13 is preferably interposed between the upper arm 2 and the nut 11 so that when the latter is tightened initially the end of the arm exerts pressure at a part 15 of the flange near to the web 16, and with further tightening the arm becomes curved and abuts against the edge 17 of the flange. A strip 8 of rubber or other flexible or resilient material is preferably interposed between the sleeper and the base of the rail. The cross-section of the metal strip may decrease continuously from the lower to the upper arm. A bushing or bearing strip may be inserted in the recess 12 in the sleeper, the material of the strip being metal or a plastic or resilient material such as rubber. The bearing strip has diametrical lugs for securing it to the sleeper, e.g. by welding when strip and sleeper are both metal. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the upper arm of the clamping strip has its end inturned reversely and upwardly where it bears on the flange of the rail.
