Abstract

651,774. Rolling helically-finned tubes. NOYES, R. C. (Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co.). Sept. 27, 1946, No. 28949. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 2, 1947.] [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Skew-rolling.-Integrally, helical-finned heatexchanger &c. tubes having an overall fin diameter greater than or equal to the unfinned tube diameter are produced by rolling with skewed, annular-grooved rolls E. The tube is supported by a mandrel M and three symmetrically disposed power driven rolls E exert radial pressure through a conical part E<SP>6</SP>, a vee-section leading edge cutter E<SP>1</SP> and successive tapered annuli E<SP>2</SP>, E<SP>3</SP> and E<SP>4</SP> to laterally feed the tube, and extrude wall material into concave-ended tapered grooves F, F<SP>1</SP>, F2 and F<SP>3</SP> successively traversed by the fin G<SP>1</SP>. A final parallel annulus E<SP>5</SP> extrudes the tube slightly and alters the helix angle. The peripheral surfaces of the annuli are in rolling contact with the tube and extrude the fins radially without axial pressure. For making fins of equal diameter to the tube the initial conical portion E<SP>6</SP> is increased in length. The rolls, Fig. 1 (not shown), are mounted on pivots eccentrically secured to rocker arms for simultaneous radial feeding. Specification 651,775 is referred to.
